A Robot Named Fight: Physical Edition Pre-Orders Open

Pre-orders are now open for two physical editions of the Metroidvania game A Robot Named Fight! for the Nintendo Switch.  There will be a “premium edition”, that’s a physical copy with a few extras that will sell for $40.  There’s also a $60 “retro edition”, which is essentially a “collectors edition” with an NES-style box and some other additions.  More details are below the link:

Pre orders are open now and you can select which edition you’d like from the drop-down menu:  http://bit.ly/robotnamedfight

In A Robot Named Fight, each time you play, a new procedurally-generated labyrinth will be created, allowing for an almost infinite combination of maps and item locations.  I haven’t played the game yet, but I’m definitely intrigued by the concept!  I’m a giant fan of Metroidvania’s and there’s been quite a few good ones released in the past few years;  I’d happily welcome one more and I appreciate a new gameplay aspect…as long as it doesn’t change the fundamentals of the game.  Here’s what they have to say about it:

In A Robot Named Fight! you will explore a different, procedurally-generated, labyrinth every time you play. You’ll discover randomized power ups that allow you to traverse obstacles and discover new areas beneath the surface of a meat infested robot city. As you delve deeper you’ll discover a rich narrative conveyed through gameplay and environmental hints. Be careful though, death is forever in this roguelike metroidvania.

I’m not sure how to interpret this, as procedurally generated levels don’t always feel like a good fit for a game.  For example, Dead Cells received excellent reviews and people generally held it in high regard – But I got bored with it pretty quickly.  The game was basically designed to play over and over, expecting slightly different results each time.  Metroidvania’s are the opposite:  You explore a world, with items and powerups letting you access areas previously unavailable at the beginning of the game.  One of the main aspects that makes something a “Metroidvania” is walking through the same map, learning new things about it as you go.  I’m not sure how that will fit into this game, but I pre-ordered one anyway, as it looks like it’s worth finding out!
