Developer starlightk7 has just released a reverse-engineered Super Famicom / Super Nintendo motherboard via the CERN-OHL-S license. The board is based off the SHVC-CPU-01 motherboard, with the TCMK-77XR SHVC-SOUND module. The goal of this project was a 1:1 copy of the original for preservation purposes, however as things progress we may see the project forked with some upgrades built-in. If you’d like more info, George from iUpRestorations has a video below and is also selling them. More info below the links:

I’m a massive fan of work like this, for all the reasons: Preservation, restoration…and modding! And while I’m sure as time goes by, we’ll see projects like this allow damaged consoles to have a new life, I’m also curious what the homebrew scene can do with it. One project that was still in beta (maybe even alpha?) required you to remove the main chips, in order to implement a new circuit that allowed for clean video output, however that project didn’t go far mainly because of how complicated the mod would be. I’m interested to see if something like that could be implemented right on the board!
There’s also potential for things like the digital audio mod, but also having expansion audio (MSU-1 & SGB) muxed into that as well. And obviously some 2-chip bypasses would be great too. Of course while all of these things are possible, they’re all a lot of work, so we’ll just have to see what the community does with this!
