OutRun on Game Boy Color

A few months ago, we posted about “What If Outrun” – An experiment by homebrew designer EGVroom that attempted to see what a port of Outrun to the Game Boy Color would be like.  The original release had two levels and it was pretty neat.  But now, EGVroom has just completed porting the whole game, including an awesome conversion of the soundtrack by SloopyGoop.  Check it out here and more info after the link:

First, a quick shoutout to Zanac DC for creating the awesome GBC box I used (with permission ;p) as the thumbnail.  Next, please remember that while this ROM is completely free, if you love work like this, please consider “tipping” the creator via the itch.io link.

…and as for the game itself, I’m kinda blown away.  It feels exactly like what you’d expect out of a high quality GBC port and if released in the 90’s, I think it would have been a hit.  Of course, these days you can run a near-perfect emulation of the arcade version on a handheld, so it’s important to keep context in mind.  But I think anyone who games on a GBC and has the ability to play ROMs should definitely give this a try.

You can also play it right in your web browser in the same link, so even if you don’t have an easy way to play GBC games, you can at least see and hear an example for yourselves!
