Mr Cart – New Virtual Boy ROM Cart

Kevin Mellott has just opened pre-orders on a run of Mr Cart’s – A new ROM cart for the Virtual Boy made by developer Mr. Flower.  This is a more traditional style ROM cart, that allows you to select your game via an on-screen menu.  It’s compatible with all ROMs (including Hyper Fighting) and load times range from about ten seconds to a minute depending on game size; Like with other ROM carts, re-loading the last game you loaded to flash is instant.  The price is about two hundred dollars and its due to ship to customers by fall of this year.  More info after the links:

This appears to be an excellent option for people who prefer a standard ROM cart.  That said, the HyperFlash 32 is still amazing and I love the eInk screen – Check out the video at the bottom of the page for more info.

As for the Mr Cart, I haven’t personally used one, but the unboxing video below shows it in action and it seems to work just fine.  There’s a few things to note, like the MicroSD should be formatted FAT32, the maximum file length is 34 characters, it can only handle up to a 16GB MicroSD (more than enough for all VB games) and there’s a maximum of 100 files per folder (that’s more than there are VB games).

One other thing to note, is the Mr Cart will create a savegame file for each ROM, even if it doesn’t support saves, to err on the side of caution; These are all stored in the “save” folder in the root of the MicroSD.  You’ll also need to put the system files in the “_SYSTEM_” folder and all games in the “GAMES” folder or subdirectories.

Overall, I’m thrilled to see another option available, as the Virtual Boy homebrew community is making some incredible games that rival retail releases!
