Kando’s SNES Rumble Patches

The developer Kandowontu recently released a series of SNES romhacks that enable rumble support via Randy Linden’s code.  Games like Super Mario World, Super Metroid and Super Mario Kart had over 30 different rumble tables applied, to truly make this feel like an immersive addition to the games.  To try these patches, you’ll either need the latest version of Mesen or Ares software emulators, the latest MiSTer SNES Core, or wait for the Doom controller to be released and play it on original hardware via a ROM Cart.  While all of Kando’s Patreon posts containing the hacks are all eventually made public and everything’s free to download, please consider supporting if you’d like this work to continue.  More info after the links:

I’ve personally tried these rumble additions with the Doom controller on original hardware and it’s my strong opinion that they do NOT feel like some rumbly gimmick – The rumble’s intensity matches what’s on-screen and I often didn’t even realize it was there.  Which is a compliment!  Like the Phillips Hue TV lighting (that everyone else seems to hate ;p), I often didn’t notice it was there unless I was paying attention – It just added to the experience and made them all feel a bit more modern, while being exactly the same.  Which probably sounds dumb, but look, if you have a PC controller with rumble support, just give it a try yourself and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

The only downside is the rumble patch can’t be applied to some other hacks as well, so no Super Metroid with both rumble and the Sam Miller soundtrack.  Oh well, do it like I do and play part of the game with one, rename the sav file and continue the game with the other!

I’ve actually been a fan of Kando’s work ever since The Handlebar Gamer told me about his amazing Star Fox “Exploration Showcase” remake:  https://romhackplaza.org/romhacks/starfox-ex-super-nintendo/  Hopefully someday I’ll get to livestream that one!  Until then, definitely check it and the rest of these out yourself!
