How The PS1’s Security Was Defeated

Modern Vintage Gamer recently released a video that explains how the original PlayStaytion’s security was defeated and how the discs themselves were left mostly unencrypted.

The story is more complicated than “people used a swap trick” though, with MVG detailing how the security functions worked and how it related to the technology of the era.  With ODE’s and ROM carts so readily available and the PSIO mostly in stock these days, it’s easy to forget the steps we went through as kids to get our backups running.

While I certainly appreciate the simplicity of the newer methods to boot ROMs/ISO’s, I think I’ll go hold a pen in my PS1 and see if I can still pull off the swap trick, just for old time’s sake…
