SCART Cleaner

The SCART Cleaner is not a scaler!!!  It routes the analog signal to the analog pins on the DVI connector!!!  Visualize it exactly as if it was a SCART-to-SCART device, just with a different connector on the output side for interfacing with capture cards and displays’ analog inputs.  Please read this page for more info:

The SCART Cleaner is an open-source (CERN OHLv2) device, designed for 15KHz (240p & 480i) retro gaming signals.  I’d someday like to see a SCART2VGA version that’s identical, but with a male VGA output connector, instead of the DVI;  This will allow more flexibility to your setup, depending on your target capture card or device.

The gerbers, as well as the Eagle design files can be downloaded here.  These boards are tested and confirmed working:  http://retrorgb.com/assets/dvi/SCART2DVIv1.1.zip

Purchase:

Insurrection Industries has made the SCART2DVI version of the SCART Cleaner available for purchase.  Please read this page and in the video capture section before purchasing…this is NOT a scaler!:  https://insurrectionindustries.com/product/scart2dvi/

Introduction

This device is powered by USB, passes through audio and has toggle switches for both the LPF and sync stripper.  My advice is to start with both switches off and toggle as needed.  I’d expect in most cases you’d need the sync stripper on.  If you’re not sure if your console already has a LPF (such as something modded with a THS7314) then try toggling to see if it removes noise.  More detailed information on how to use this adapter can be found here:  http://www.retrorgb.com/datapathcapture.html

3D Printed Case

A 3D printed case will soon be available for the SCART2DVI.  This will be available as a free, open-source 3D print file and also available to purchase.

DVI-I Cable / Connector

This device connects to your capture card via a DVI-I cable or coupler.  Make sure whatever your connection is using has the analog pins, otherwise it won’t work!

Other Cables & Accessories

If you’re keeping the SCART2DVI close to your capture card for the least amount of signal loss, you’ll want some short cables.  I also like to use a cable tie, to help with strain relief when a coupler is used:

I’d like to look into improving this device any way possible.  The first thing on my list would be to have a switchable low-pass filter that can handle multiple frequencies for use across all analog resolutions (240p – 1080i).  I’d also like to see a VGA version, but held off on making one until the filtering options were solved, as most VGA uses would be 480p and up.

People with the necessary knowledge are encouraged to edit and modify this as they find ways to improve or change the design.

Voultar has also prototyped a similar product with dual DVI + SCART output designed for streamers.  No pricing and availability though.
